Miller Park Play Structure Update

Miller Park Play Structure

Thank you to the community for supporting the updates to Miller Park! The play structure is now open to the public. Additional fundraising will continue as the City of Florence seeks to add benches inside the fenced portion of the park as well as an ADA-accessible swing.

The City of Florence has replaced the play structure at Miller Park, known as ‘Fort Miller,’ which was dedicated in June 1987. The new play structure is inclusive to meet ADA standards so that children of all abilities can engage and play on the new structure. The existing stand-alone swings have been saved, refurbished, and reused in the project. The new play structure was designed for children ages 5-12 and is now open.

The City Council approved the playground purchase at their January 23rd meeting. The City Council accepted the proposal from Buell Recreation and authorized the City Manager to proceed with the purchase and installation contract for new play equipment at Miller Park in the amount of $236,481.

Working with Buell Recreation, the City designed the play structure based on the needs of the park and feedback from the community. The selected design includes a new play structure incorporating maritime elements, climbing components, slides, bridges, multiple platforms, and relocating the current swings. The small toddler playground just north of the main structure will remain.

The project removed over 11,000 square feet of sand in the play area. A combination of pour-in-place rubber surfacing material for the fall areas of the play structure, walking path from the existing sidewalk near the picnic shelter to the play structure and swings, and engineered wood fiber chips for the remainder of the play area were all included. This will assist with accessibility to the play structure.

Grants and Donations:

As the City looks for grants to help pay for the replacement and installation of a new play structure, grants will not cover all of the expenses. Playground equipment, in order to provide the experience that everyone has expressed, is simply expensive. “Where will the money come from?” A combination of grants and donations. Typically grants only provide 50% of the funds necessary for playground equipment. The other half will need to come from donations.

Community Donations:

Grants Received:

  • Oregon Parks & Recreation LGGP $75,000
  • Lane County Public Health Grant $80,000

Total Grant Funding -- $155,000 as of January 2023

City staff are seeking additional grant funding. Thank you to all who have contributed to this effort.

Timeline:

The first shipment of the play equipment arrived Tuesday, May 30, 2023. Public Works staff unloaded the equipment and inspected the equipment and then signed off on the receiving slip. Next steps:

June 19th, Public Works crews will begin dismantling the existing play structure known as 'Fort Miller'. Work will also include removal of sand from the play area and leveling the site. Beginning the week of June 26, 2023, the installation contractor will begin installing and assembling the new playground equipment with the goal of having playground ready for a public grand opening on August 1, 2023, during the Florence Police Department’s National Night Out at Miller Park. You can watch the progress of the installation on the City's construction camera located here.
