9th Street Paving Operations Begin

9th street paving

After a long and unusually wet spring, we are happy announce that the 9th Street roadway improvement project will begin paving operations on Tuesday, July 12th. The project area is 9th Street between Rhododendron Drive and Kingwood Street.

In order to begin paving, the contractor will first rotomill (grind) and pave the trench patches. Once completed, the contractor will rotomill the entire width of 9th Street between Rhododendron Drive and Kingwood Street, including the side streets where construction activities occurred. After the milling is complete, the contractor will place a layer of glass grid pavement fabric, repave 9th Street and re-stripe the road. The placement of the glass grid pavement fabric helps to prevent ‘reflection’ of any cracking of the existing pavement through the new paving to the surface of the roadway. Once completed, 9th Street from Rhododendron Drive to Kingwood Street will have a new paved road surface.

Below is the latest schedule from our contractor:

  • Tuesday, July 12th, crews from RiverBend Materials (the City’s subcontractor) will rotomill and pave the trench patches on 9th Street. They will also begin to rotomill the east bound lane of 9th Street. Motorists are advised that flaggers will be controlling traffic for one-way operation while work is being completed.
  • Wednesday, July 13th, continue rotomilling operations and complete east bound lane, west bound lane and side street areas.
  • Thursday, July 14th, apply the hot oil, pavement fabric and pave the west bound lane.
  • Friday, July 15th, apply the hot oil, pavement fabric and pave the east bound lane.
  • Monday, July 18th, pave the side streets to the limits of the areas that were within the project area.
  • Tuesday, July 19th, complete any remaining paving operations.

Residents and businesses are advised to use alternate routes to avoid the work area beginning July 12th. If you do need to travel in 9th Street corridor, traffic control will be in place. Please slow down, be patient and attentive to the traffic control flaggers.

The City would like to extend our thanks to our community and emergency response partners for your patience as we bring this very important project to a close. The project has improved water supplies for fire suppression to the Hospital and surrounding area. The contractor and City will continue to work to minimize any inconveniences to all that travel along 9th Street during the paving process.
