2020 STREET STRIPING PROGRAM

caution wet paint

Striping of City streets to begin Wednesday, July 29, 2020, weather permitting.

Under a co-operative contract with the City of Florence, Lane County crews will begin striping Kingwood Street between 10th and 25th streets and Rhododendron Drive from 35th to Sebastian streets on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 29th, weather permitting. These will be the only streets to be striped this year. Next to traffic control device maintenance, striping is a top safety priority.

Coronavirus has affected many of our operations and street striping operations is no exception. With limited operators, reduced workforce, and the need to provide physical distancing between the actual striping operators, Lane County has significantly curtailed the amount of city streets to be striped.

Please remember to give striping crews plenty of room and watch for the orange traffic cones on Kingwood Street and Rhododendron Drive or “wet paint” signs on the vehicles in front or behind the striper. Although we use fast-drying, water-based paint, driving over fresh stripes or changing lanes when following a striping crew can remove the reflectivity of the stripe, reduce safety, increase maintenance costs, and spray paint onto your vehicle. The City of Florence and Lane County does not assume responsibility for paint on vehicles.

When do we stripe?

Crews can only stripe when the road is dry and the temperature is above 50 degrees.

Watch out for orange traffic cones and "wet paint" signs on City and County vehicles

The paint we use is engineered to last, so it may be very difficult to remove from your vehicle if you drive on it while it's wet. Once we spray the paint on the roadway, it can take as little as thirty seconds or as long as five minutes to dry.  If you do happen to drive over wet paint, it should be removed within the hour by a high-pressure hose and using warm soapy water.  The city and county will deny all reimbursement claims if a driver crosses over wet paint.

Be prepared

Watch for orange traffic cones, warning signs and warning trucks.  Don't change lanes behind a striping truck and do not drive on the yellow or white lines.

What's so special about the paint?

The paint is water based (better for the environment) and as the paint is applied thousands of little glass beads are deposited upon the wet paint.  The glass beads reflect lots of light even at night. When vehicle headlights hit the paint, tiny spheres in the glass beads reflect the light, making the stripes brighter for drivers in dark or rainy conditions.
