The Community Emergency Notification System (CENS) is a phone system utilized to call people on their land line phone if there is an eminent threat to their well being. Most recently it was used during the tsunami warning of March 11, 2011. Please be aware that if your residence is not in the inundation area, you would not receive a CENS notification to evacuate.
We do not have a generic list to add phone numbers outside of the inundation area for inclusion in this type of automated call for tsunami evacuation notification. The calls made were for those locations within the designated tsunami zone only. The service provider of CENS, Intrado, is working on a product that will allow people to sign up their cell phones to receive these types of notification, if desired. When this product becomes available we will post information on this website.
Another option for you is to purchase a NOAA radio. These radios broadcast NOAA alerts, such as a tsunami warning, and can be programmed to turn on when normally not in use. The tsunami warning sirens are designed to notify those who are outdoors in low lying areas or on the beaches.
During the March 11, 2011 tsunami warning many people were not aware if they live in an inundation zone. Anyone may see where they live in relation to the tsunami inundation zone by visiting the web link below.
