Police Officer (Lateral)

$26.58—35.31/hr. DOQ.

The City of Florence is accepting applications for an experienced Police Officer to join our Police Department! This position is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position. This position is represented by Florence Police Employees Association. This posting may be used to fill multiple vacancies within the next 6 months.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

To perform law enforcement and crime prevention work, including patrol and investigation; enforces federal, state and local laws; does related work as required.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Below are several classifications of essential functions that this position is responsible for performing. Please see the attached job description for illustrative examples of the types of duties performed under the classification. This is not intended to represent a complete list of all assigned duties.

Enforcement – This position is responsible for performing a number of functions related to the enforcement of the law, including patrol and investigative duties.

Crime Prevention – This position is responsible for duties related to crime prevention.

Apprehension Functions – This position is responsible for various aspects associated with apprehension.

General Policing Functions - An employee in this class performs general law enforcement work.

Perform all other related duties as assigned.

 

COMPENSATION

Please see the attached Union Payscale for FY18. Note that the City does not pay PERS contributions, but instead increases the salary of Police Officer employees by 5.5% to offset the required 6% PERS contribution.

In addition to base pay, officers are eligible to receive additional compensation for professional certification and education levels.

MANDATORY MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of experience of recent experience (within last five (5) years) as a state certified law enforcement officer.

Certification:

  • Completion of DPSST Basic law enforcement training and state certification; or
  • State certification recognized by Oregon DPSST. Must provide proof of certification at time of application

In addition to the above requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Must have a High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) or equivalent.
  • Must provide US citizenship documentation or be eligible to become a naturalized citizen within 18 months of appointment.
  • Must possess a valid Oregon driver’s license.
  • Must successfully complete and pass a comprehensive background investigation, physical medical exam, drug screen, and psychological exam. Additionally, must obtain CJIS clearance.
  • Lateral candidates may be subject to an abbreviated process where the POST and ORPAT tests are bypassed.

 

Special Qualifications:

  • Must attain and maintain basic first aid and CPR Certification.

DESIRABLE ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Actively working as a law enforcement officer, with additional preference given to Oregon certified officers.

  • Bi-lingual ability in Spanish and English (additional premiums available).

  • Any higher level educational degree (additional premiums available).

 

SELECTION PROCESS

Application materials are used to select the top candidates. Those selected for further consideration are invited to an oral interview. Prior to hiring the successful candidate must pass all phases of the examination process, including:

  • Criminal background investigation
  • Psychological test
  • Drug screening
  • Physical and agility testing

Lateral candidates may be subject to an abbreviated process where the POST and ORPAT tests are bypassed.
