Japanese Friendship City

City of Florence Oregon Official Website

The City of Florence has had a Friendship City relationship with Yamagata City in Japan since the early 1990s with the assistance of former Mayor Roger McCorkle. Each year a delegation of Japanese students visits Florence during the summer. They meet with the Mayor and learn about our community. In the past, Florence has sent a delegation of citizens over to visit Yamagata City, but has not done so in several years.

In 2013, Yamagata City requested that we send a representative over for a year-long appointment to participate in teaching English to school children. We are currently in our second year of having a citizen of Florence work for Yamagata City as a liaison to the schools in their City.

It is tradition for Friendship Cities to exchange gifts. The Florence Mayor and City Council sends a gift with the delegation to be presented to Yamagata City and their Mayor. The delegation also brings gifts for the Florence officials and presents them to the Mayor each year. You can view these gifts in the display cabinet in City Hall across from the City Council Chambers.

If you have any questions about our Friendship City relationship, please contact City Hall at 541-997-3437.
