Measure 20-167 Would Maintain Current Fire Protection Services
Background
- Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue has 60 volunteer firefighters and seven full-time professionally trained staff who provide fire
protection and emergency medical care.
- The City of Florence has contracted with Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue for these services for over a decade (1999).
- Last year nearly 40% of the calls Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue responded to were within the City of Florence.
- Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue has notified the City that it will no longer provide the same level of services to city residents under
the current contract. Therefore, Measure 20-167 was placed on the ballot to allow voters to approve or reject annexation to Siuslaw
Valley Fire & Rescue which would maintain the current level of service.
What Would Passage of Measure 20-167 Mean?
- Passage of this measure would allow Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue to maintain its current level of service.
- Under the provisions of the measure all properties within the City boundaries would be annexed to Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue.
- iity residents would have direct representation in policy making and budget decisions by serving as Siuslaw Valley Fire &
Rescuue's board of directors.
How Much Would Passage of Measure 20-167 Cost?
- Passage of this measure would increase property taxes by an additional $.48 per $1,000 of assessed value. Under resolutions and
intergovernmental agreements signed by the City and Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue, the City would voluntarily reduce its current
permanent property tax rate by $.39 per $1,000 of assessed value and Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue would levy a permanent property tax
rate of $.87 per $1,000 of assessed value on City residents.
- The median assessed value of the average home within the City's boundaries is $148,770; annexation would cost the typical
homeowner an additional $72 a year or $6 a month.
- The City's permanent property tax rate is currently $2.86 per $1,000 of assessed value (the city currently spends
approximately $.31 of its total permanent tax rate of $2.86 to fund the existing contract with Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue).
Why Is This Annexation Proposed?
- Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue would not continue to provide the same level of service under the existing contract with the City.
- Measure 20-167 would maintain current fire protection services and was placed on the ballot to allow voters to approve or reject
annexation to Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue.
